A good farm shop is more than a greengrocer with a car park. These six, spread from the Surrey Hills to the east of the county, each have a clear reason to make the trip. Opening times below come from the shops' own pages and listings, so a quick call before a long drive is sensible.
Secretts, Milford
At Hurst Farm, Chapel Lane, Milford, near Godalming, Secretts is a family business more than a century old. The cheese counter stocks over 300 cheeses, and there is sourdough and artisan bread, cakes and pastries, plus Black Barn Butchers, a wine merchant and a coffee shop. A farmers' market runs on the third Sunday of each month.
Opens: Monday to Saturday 8.30am to 5.30pm, Sunday 10am to 4pm, bank holidays 10am to 4pm, according to the Secretts website. Telephone 01483 520500.
Priory Farm, South Nutfield
On Sandy Lane, South Nutfield, near Redhill, Priory Farm has been in the Shinner family since 1957. Expect seasonal local fruit and veg, ethically sourced meat, cheese, deli and gifts. A fishmonger, Veasey and Sons, visits on Fridays and Saturdays, and bread and pastries from The Hungry Guest arrive from Friday to Sunday. With a play area on the farm and a Garden Room Café, it suits families best.
Opens: Monday to Saturday 9am to 5.30pm, Sunday and bank holidays 10.30am to 4.30pm. Closed on Easter Sunday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day, per the Priory Farm visit page.
Kingfisher Farm Shop, Abinger Hammer
Just off the A25 on Guildford Road, in the Surrey Hills, Kingfisher Farm Shop is the place for watercress. The family has grown it at Abinger Hammer since 1854 in natural spring water, and the old watercress shed became the shop in 1999. There is also a flower shop, and the main barn overlooks a large pond.
Opens: Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm, Sunday 10am to 4pm, per the Kingfisher website. Telephone 01306 730703.
Flower Farm, Godstone
On the Oxted Road (A25) at the foot of the North Downs, Flower Farm has been run by the Deeley family since 1974. The farm shop is known for its traditional butcher and artisan deli: grass-fed beef, free-range meat, handmade sausages and British cheeses. A tea room, restaurant and gardens sit alongside. One reviewer finds it a little on the expensive side, so treat it as a place for the good butcher's counter. It is not to be confused with Godstone Farm, the separate animal attraction.
Opens: the site and restaurant are listed as open daily 9am to 5pm. Check the shop's own hours before you set off.
Hyde Orchard Farm Shop, Churt
On Hyde Lane in Churt, between Hindhead and Farnham, Hyde Orchard Farm Shop grows its own seasonal soft fruit and apples, and has a butcher's counter and bakery. Fresh fish is sold on Fridays and Saturdays. It says it won Best Farm Shop in Surrey at the 2024 Muddy Stilettos Awards. The on-site café, The Hyde Out, serves breakfast, brunch and lunch.
Opens: listings give Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm. Check before visiting on a Sunday.
Village Greens, Denbies, Dorking
Village Greens sits on the Denbies Wine Estate, below the Surrey Hills outside Dorking. Veg comes in part from a Victorian walled garden on the estate, alongside produce from around 60 local producers within 30 miles, and fresh bread and cakes. It pairs easily with a walk or a vineyard visit. See the Denbies page for times; the estate is listed as open daily, 9am to 5.30pm, but confirm the shop's hours.
Planning the trip
Secretts and Kingfisher both open on Sundays but close earlier, so go before 4pm.
Priory Farm is the easiest choice with children.
Kingfisher and Village Greens combine well in one Surrey Hills day.
