Al Forno Virginia Water

restaurantItalian££

An authentic Italian restaurant serving wood-fired pizza, handmade pasta, and classic Italian dishes. A neighbourhood favourite with a warm, family-run atmosphere.

Our note

Al Forno sits on Station Approach in Virginia Water, which tells you most of what you need to know about how it works. This is a restaurant built around the short trip: a walk from the platform, a quick drive from the surrounding lanes, somewhere you go on a Tuesday as readily as a Saturday. Italian food, wood-fired pizza, handmade pasta, the familiar classics.

The ££ price band is the honest signal here. It places Al Forno in the middle, more than a high-street chain, well short of a special-occasion bill. You are paying for a proper kitchen and a table someone has looked after, not for tasting menus or theatre. For a village like Virginia Water, where the surrounding area runs expensive, a genuine mid-price neighbourhood restaurant is a useful thing to have within walking distance of the station.

It is listed as good for family dining, and the wood-fired pizza and pasta offering backs that up. Children who will eat a margherita are easy to feed; adults who want something more considered have the rest of the menu. That combination is what makes a restaurant workable for a group of mixed ages, and it is the main reason to choose Al Forno over somewhere with a narrower appeal.

When does it suit? A weeknight dinner without much planning. A Saturday lunch that does not need to become an event. A birthday where the point is that everyone is comfortable rather than impressed. It is described as having a warm, family-run atmosphere, which in practice usually means a smaller room and staff who notice you, pleasant, but also a reason to book rather than chance it, particularly at weekends.

A few practical points. The Station Approach location makes the train a real option, which matters if wine is involved; parking in and around village station approaches is often limited, so allow for that. We do not have current opening hours or the menu in front of us, and Italian kitchens of this type frequently change specials, so ring or check online before travelling, especially if you are coming with a group or need a particular time.

Virginia Water is not a town with a long restaurant row. Its character is residential and green, with the park and the lake drawing people in from further afield, and eating out here tends to mean a handful of dependable local options rather than a wide choice. Al Forno reads as one of those dependable options: Italian, mid-price, aimed squarely at people who live nearby and want a decent dinner without a journey.
