Denbies Vineyard Hotel

England's first vineyard hotel, set in the heart of Denbies Wine Estate with outstanding views across 265 acres and the rolling Surrey Hills. Offering 17 ensuite rooms with vineyard restaurant and bar.

Our note

Denbies Vineyard Hotel sits on the London Road side of Dorking, within the Denbies Wine Estate itself rather than in the town centre. That is the whole point of it. This is a hotel built around a working vineyard, 265 acres of it, with views out across the planting and the Surrey Hills beyond. It describes itself as England's first vineyard hotel, and whatever else you make of that claim, it tells you where the emphasis lies.

There are 17 ensuite rooms, which puts it firmly in the small-hotel bracket. Expect the scale and the service patterns of a place that size: fewer rooms, fewer facilities than a chain, and a stronger chance of being booked out on a summer weekend. There is a restaurant and bar on site, serving British food alongside the wine. Beyond that, the menu is not something we can describe without seeing it, and menus at estate restaurants change with the season, check directly before you travel if you are coming for the food specifically.

The £££ price band is worth reading properly. This is not a budget stopover and it is not a luxury country-house rate either. It signals a mid-to-upper price for a night's stay in Surrey, which is a county where accommodation rarely comes cheap in any case. What you are paying for is the setting and the proximity to the vineyard, not scale or spa facilities.

Who it suits: people who want the estate. Wine lovers, and anyone planning to do a vineyard tour and would rather not drive afterwards. That last point is the practical case for staying here. It works for a weekend away, an anniversary, or a small group making a day of the estate and extending it into a night. Business travellers will find it quiet and a fair distance in feel from a town-centre hotel, which may be an advantage or not, depending on the meeting.

Before booking, a few things to sort out. Tour availability and timings are run by the estate, not something you should assume comes with the room, book them separately and in advance. With 17 rooms, weekend and harvest-season dates will go early. And be clear on the location: the address is Dorking, but you are out on the London Road at the estate, so factor in the walk or the taxi if you were planning an evening in the town.

Dorking is a market town under the North Downs with walking on its doorstep, and Denbies is one of the reasons people come to this part of Surrey at all. The hotel's position is honest enough, it exists to let you stay where the vines are. If the vineyard is not the draw, there are cheaper beds closer to the high street. If it is, there is no closer option.
