One of Britain's highest-rated hotels set in 123 acres near Bagshot. Home to The Latymer, which has retained a Michelin star for 20 years, plus a world-class spa with ballroom pool, outdoor pools, and ice igloo.

Our note

Pennyhill Park sits on London Road in Bagshot, on a 123-acre estate at the western edge of Surrey. It is a hotel first, with a restaurant and a spa attached, and the scale of the grounds is the thing that sets it apart from most places of its type in the county. You do not arrive and pop in. It is a destination, and it is priced and organised accordingly.

The ££££ band is not a formality here. This is fine dining in a country-house hotel with a Michelin-starred restaurant on site, The Latymer, which has held its star for twenty years. Twenty years of consistency at that level is a harder thing to achieve than a single good year, and it is the most useful signal a reader has when weighing up whether the outlay is justified. What it does not tell you is what is on the plate. Kitchens at this level change their menus regularly, so check directly before you book if you have a particular occasion or dietary requirement in mind.

The spa is the other half of the proposition, and for many guests it is the main reason to come. There is a ballroom pool, outdoor pools and an ice igloo. That combination suits the two things Pennyhill is most often booked for: spa weekends and celebrations. A significant birthday, an anniversary, a group who want to spend a full day on site rather than moving between places. It is less obviously a venue for a quick weeknight dinner, though the restaurant exists independently of a room booking.

Things worth knowing before you commit. The estate is large, so allow time on arrival and factor in walking between the hotel, spa and restaurant. Fine dining at this level usually carries its own booking conditions, deposits, cancellation windows, sometimes dress expectations, and these are set by the venue rather than anything we can confirm here, so ask when you reserve. The same applies to spa access: whether it is included, bookable separately or restricted to residents is the kind of detail that varies and is worth pinning down in advance.

Bagshot is a small Surrey town close to the Hampshire and Berkshire borders, well placed for the M3 and for anyone coming out from London. Pennyhill Park is by some distance the largest and best-known thing in it, and it operates at a level that draws people from well outside the county. If you are choosing on price alone, this is not the one. If you are choosing on occasion, it is the obvious candidate in this part of Surrey.
