The Old Crown

The Old Crown sits on Thames Street in Weybridge, beside the river. It is a traditional pub first and a place to eat second, a bar with food rather than a dining room with a bar attached. That distinction matters when you are deciding where to go. If you want white tablecloths and a tasting menu, this is not it. If you want a pint, a plate of something familiar and a seat by the water, it is squarely aimed at you.

The price band is a single pound sign, and the kitchen is described as home-cooked meals and sandwiches at value-for-money prices. In practice that signals pub cooking at pub money: the kind of place where a family of four can eat without a conversation about it afterwards, and where a sandwich is a legitimate order rather than an apology. Value is the stated proposition, so judge it on that.

Two seating areas are worth knowing about. There is plenty of room inside, and there is an outdoor area by the river. These serve very different purposes. The riverside space is the draw in warm weather and on long summer evenings, and you should assume it fills up accordingly, a fine afternoon in Weybridge will put pressure on any outdoor table with a view of the Thames. The indoor capacity means the pub still works in poor weather, which is more than can be said for some riverside places that live or die by the forecast.

Who it suits: walkers coming off the towpath, families who want somewhere unfussy, a weeknight dinner where nobody wants to plan, a Sunday afternoon that stretches. It is family-run, which usually shows in the way a place is kept rather than in anything written on a menu. For a business lunch it would depend entirely on how formal your lunch needs to be; for a milestone birthday you would probably look elsewhere in the borough.

Before booking, two honest caveats. We do not have current opening hours or a menu in front of us, and pub kitchens often keep shorter service hours than the bar itself, ring ahead if you are travelling for a meal rather than a drink. Likewise, outdoor seating at a riverside pub is weather- and season-dependent, and the same table that is the best seat in the house in July may be shut off in January.

Weybridge has its share of smarter, pricier places to eat. The Old Crown occupies the other end of that range: a straightforward riverside local doing straightforward food at a fair price. That is a useful thing for a town to have.
